New Year, Same (Emergency Preparedness) Plan

As we start a new year, it’s that time of year again to reviewing your emergency plans. At the beginning of the year people tend to be more motivated to get things done and start something new. This is the perfect opportunity for you to add preparedness into your plans. Preparing CAN be easy! When you prepare in small steps, breaking things down into small tasks, the overall goal become easier.

For January, we focus on “Making a Plan”. The unique thing about this month is you don’t have to spend any money! Make a list of what you want to do to prepare each this year. You also want to sit down with loved ones, friends, and neighbors to discuss what your plan looks like. Don’t compare your plan to a New Year’s resolution, preparing for a disaster gives you the mental tools you need as well that can last a lifetime!

Find out what types of disasters or emergencies would affect you. Do you live in area prone to flooding, wildfires, tornadoes, or other severe weather? If you live in an apartment building on the top floor, your plan will look a lot different than a family of four who live in a home. Personalizing your preparedness plan is the key to having an effective plan. Planning ahead reduces anxiety and stress. Why? When you know what to do during a disaster, the more your mind can be at ease when you have an idea of what to expect.
